Sugar Creek Camp It is the goal of Sugar Creek Camp to intervene in the cycle of poverty. Through positive intervention-education, recreation and life skills, Sugar Creek Camp hopes to provide a model for positive and productive living. By providing the appropriate foundation, children will have the necessary tools to make positive life choices before they turn to negative forms of acceptance and behavior. Sugar Creek Camp would like to request your support for our Year 2001 Summer Camp Programs. Along with traditional camp activities, Sugar Creek campers participate in a wide variety of educational programs designed to promote positive living and life guides for success. Literacy Program: Realizing that the key to success is proficiency in literacy, Sugar Creek Camp offers a literacy component with all camp programs. The program works in conjunction with the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Library System; the Reading is FUNdamental program and Scholastic Book Fair. Sugar Creek campers are provided with confidence building programs to enhance their educational skills. Challenge Course: Realizing that the key to peaceful co-existence is the ability to learn to live in community with one another, Sugar Creek Camp provides age appropriate Challenge Courses. Designed by the Central Oklahoma Christian Camp, Challenge Courses allow children to participate in a teamwork-oriented program designed to build self-confidence and promote cooperation. Success with the Challenge Courses can be directly related to overcoming obstacles in their own life and give campers a sense of empowerment. Conflict Resolution/Peer Mediation: Realizing that many of the children served by Sugar Creek Camp have never experienced the side of life where problems are settled peacefully, Sugar Creek Camp provides conflict resolution skills that allow children to express their feelings and needs ina safe and appropriate manner. By working together with appropriate problem solving approaches, children develop the necessary skills and compassion to succeed in life. The above-mentioned components along with the traditional camp activities provide for a well-rounded program designed to promote positive living. Sugar Creek Camp is a place where children, some for the very first time, can experience the great outdoors and begin to understand that working in community with others, eating three meals a day and knowing what to expect and what is expected of them can be a reality.
