Harn Homestead
2004/2005 Recipient

The Harn Homestead and 1889er Museum has the goal of preserving the historic Harn Homestead and to educate the public about the Territorial Years of Oklahoma. The Museum remains on the original 9.4 acres that Alice and William Fremont Harn claimed in the Land Run of 1889 and it has the original 1904 Victorian home that was built there as well, along with other historic structures. The breathtaking acreage has historic facilities and an interactive museum.

Students can spend the day on the property learning about life in the early days of settlement in Oklahoma. In the turn of the century farmhouse and Shinn barn, they can experience day-to-day chores under the guidance of program facilitators. The 1897 one room Stoney Point Schoolhouse is the setting for students to relive the educational experience common in Oklahoma Territory. Teachers and students alike can dress in costume and bring their lunch pails. Teachers are provided a curriculum guide with lesson plans or they may request a school marm for the day. Students learn about Victorian Era with a guided tour of the Harn House.

To the public, the museum also offers guided tours of the Victorian Home of William Fremont Harn, the root cellar, the Shepherd House, the dairy barn, the windmill barn, and the one-room Stoney Point Schoolhouse. These tours reveal many details about William Fremont Harn and the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889.
