Calm Waters
2003/2004 Recipient

CalmWaters is a support center for children whose lives have been changed by death or divorce. The death of a parent, sibling or other loved one can bring on turbulent and frightening times for young children and teenagers. Similar feelings often occur in children when their parents divorce. CalmWaters provides a supportive and understanding place for these children to share their experiences and feelings in a group setting, thus hastening the process of healing. Parents or guardians receive education and understanding of what their children are experiencing and how to interact with them during this period of adjustment.

Divorce changes a family in many ways. It can be a confusing and painful process for parents and even more so for children. Half of all children will experience the divorce of their parents. And when their parents do divorce, children often get caught up in the quagmire of emotions. Shock disbelief, fear, sadness and anger are all common feelings, but children don't understand them and don't know what to do about them.

Support Groups Can Help Free support groups bring helping and healing At Calm Waters, children find a safe and supportive place to share their feelings and experiences in a group of their peers. Through activities and discussions, the healing begins. Parents find help and support too as they meet with other parents, sharing their concerns and learning how to help themselves and their children through the turbulent times. Research shows children adjust better if the level of conflict between parents is kept to a minimum. At Calm Waters, parents learn good parenting, communication and coping skills. They also learn to better understand what their children are experiencing and how to effectively address their needs.

Grief through a child's eyes For children and teenagers, the death of a parent, sibling or other loved one is an experience that will change their lives forever. Right now in Oklahoma City alone, thousands of children are dealing with the loss of a loved one. Grief can make a child's life seem out of control. They are bombarded with emotions and have neither the life experience nor the coping skills necessary to handle them.

Helping Children Cope with loss Calm Waters offers grief support groups for children and their families. As feelings of loss very with age, children meet in groups of their own age. Guided by trained volunteer facilitators, these children support one another, share experiences and feelings and begin to heal. While the children meet, their parents or guardians meet also. Together they gain an understanding of what their children are experiencing and learn how to help them through these times of change.
